Meeting - Field Trip to Gene Longs Workshop. - 7:00pm
Speaker - Gene Long
For our program in May, we will visit Gene Long. Gene has been working on a Lancair Super ES for several years. He says he is 90% done, and therefore only 50% to go. It has taken a bit longer than the brochure suggested. He is planning a high tech panel and hanging a Continental IO-550 in it, rated at 310 horse power. It should be a going machine, once he gets it going to the airport.
Gene's shop is at 869 Bluebird Lane, just off Baseline Road. That's a mile from 95th street, going west on Baseline or a mile past 75th on Baseline if coming east from Boulder. If you are coming from the West, turn north just past the Lafayette Water Treatment Plant on Baseline. That's a right turn. If you are coming the other way from Boulder and get to the Water Treatment Plant, you've gone too far. Turn back.
Gene advises that seating is limited. It would really help if you could bring your own chair. If you have an extra, bring two (or three). I'm sure that looking at Gene's project will bring us to our feet, but you might want something to sit on during the business meeting part. See you there at seven.
Please notice the change for this months meeting location.

Chapter 420 is hosting a Young Eagles Rally in Douglas, WY at the Converse County Airport (KDGW) beginning at 7 am
This annual event usually draws about 50 children from the Douglas area. We are always in need of pilots. Lunch will be provided for the pilots.
The event will end around noon or until there are no more kids.
This time of the year it usually gets hot and bumpy. Its no fun for the kids and not a good way to introduce them to aviation if they should get sick. Thats why we usually cut it short around noon.
If your interested in flying please contact me.

Pancakes and sausage will be served to pilots and kids.
This event is being held by a group of parents who Home School their children. There are about 100 kids in this group with an expected turn out of 50 to 75 kids. We could really use some pilots for this event. We would really hate to have to turn kids away.
Again if you would like to come and visit our Chapter and can donate a few rides to either event we would really appreciate it.

Speaker - "Dave from Rocky Mountain Props will be visiting us".
It's been said that the thing on the front of the airplane is not there to move the airplane forward, but rather to keep the pilot cool. If you doubt this, watch the pilot sweat when the prop stops!
For our February program, we have arranged for Dave from Rocky Mountain Propellers to visit with us. He will be giving us an overview on prop care and can answer most any question that you might have about your prop. It should be an interesting program.

Speaker - ...
Last minute update. We have a change of program this month.
Our previous speaker is not able to make it so we are planning to have some fun with a metal mangling program. We will show how to use a bead roller (it just arrived and I don't know what to do with it) and how to make parts by hand.
If you ever damaged a part and needed to recreate it this is the meeting for you. Or, if you have a metal forming tool or technique to share, bring it to the meeting and show others.

The great American story about the quest to fly!
The great American story about the quest to fly! Kitty Hawk celebrates the thrill of discovery and the process of hard work that leads to the first flight. Wilbur and Orville Wright, two American kids from Dayton, Ohio, succeed where a host of internationally famous scientists and inventors fail. Experience the exploration and invention that culminated in the first successful powered flight on December 17, 1903. Kitty Hawk is a true story about family, determination, invention and one of the most heart-pounding achievements in American history.

A special meeting of EAA 515 Fort Collins/Loveland
The meeting will be at the Jet Center (the FBO) at Fort Collins/Loveland Airport at 7:30 on August 3, 2004. We realize that this is the day after Oshkosh, but this is the only date that it will work.
Jon is an aviation hero in Australia, a world renowned "Earthrounder", and an excellent speaker. We feel that this is an exceptional opportunity to meet and hear one of the genuine aviation pioneers of the current era.
Hope to see you there. The August meeting of chapter 515 will be a special event, and the aviation community is invited. Our speaker will be Jon Johanson of Australia. He is the only flyer to have soloed the world three times, and the only one to have soloed both poles. He holds 51 FAI certified records. He is a national aviation hero in Australia and in 1998 received the highest English aviation award presented personally by Prince Phillip.
We in chapter 515 know Jon as an excellent speaker having been honored by him twice before. This time, he will tell us about the recent trip to the South Pole. Jon is a consummate homebuilder, having built and extensively modified his RV-4 to achieve a range of 5,800 miles. He spent five years in preparation for that flight including an 8,000 mile record setting flight around Australia.
When unforecast adverse weather and winds forced him back "north"---how about that!---toward the New Zealand side and he landed at McMurdo, one of the authorities there took one look at the little plane and assumed that, first it couldn't possibly fly the planned distance, and secondly that he must therefore be lying about it. Unfortunately, that is the version that was widely published in the world press including the phrase, "daredevil Australian pilot".
Jon's preparation including contingencies was thorough in marked contrast to others who made unsuccessful, foolhardy attempts at the same time. Jon will tell us the story and put it into context.
An RV-4 will be on display for those unfamiliar with the airplane.

The 2nd National Radial Engine Exhibition will be held at the Colorado Plains Regional Airport in Akron CO. (AKO) It is a one day event.
The Exhibition's premise at this time is not "air show" with flying demonstrations, but a display, historical exhibit, and educational affair with a large dose of fun. It has been packaged with a hot rod/custom car show and features a "fair-like" atmosphere with food and vendors and live music.
The Exhibition's primary goals are 1) to publicize our airport's capabilities to the flying public by hosting an event of national scope featuring airplanes of various sizes and interest, 2) to return something to the community for their outstanding support of the airport facility, 3) develop a marketplace for exhibitors/vendors, 4) foster interest in airport development by new tenants, and 5)the general promotion of aviation (including historical aviation), among others.
We are still in our infancy, but felt our first event was a great success with over 3000 persons attending and twenty-two round motor airplanes on display. This year seems to have that inertia behind it and looks to be stronger still.
We are supporting exhibitors by supplying fuel (with some limitations) by Chevron and Hayes Aviation. Very unique exhibits are paired with sponsors to off-set the obvious expense of rare aircraft from distant locations.
Please share your interest in the Exhibit and tell us how we might get you involved. It would be our privilege to have you attend in any capacity.

EAA 648 Chapter
Meeting (Vance Brand Airport) 7:00pm
This month, we are importing an engine expert for our program. Joe Folchert of Aircraft Cylinders and Engines, Inc. will be with us. He estimates that he has overhauled more than 1,700 engines, and claims to be able to tell what kind of oil has been used in an engine as soon as he opens it up. Over the years, he has formed some opinions about how to keep the motor in top shape.
Come on down and hear what he has to say about using auto gas, Marvel Mystery Oil, Multi-grade oils, and a bunch of other tips for the care and feeding of our engines.
Joe plans to fly down from Fort Collins. He feels safer in an airplane than driving on our highways. I like that attitude.
Also we will have: Michael Nehls the student that you may recall we helped to summer camp at Oshkosh will come to our next meeting to talk about his expierence

Whether you're already a certificated pilot or someone interested in learning to fly, this new "grass roots" initiative to reinvigorate general aviation is really starting to spread. If you're not quite sure what it's all about, now is the time to find out.
In addition to the Sport Pilot seminar, there will be a brief introduction to the General Aviation Awards program. Created to recognize industry professionals, there are several levels of reward for each category. Perhaps there is a particular flight instructor, mechanic, avionics technician or aviation safety counselor you feel is deserving of special recognition, but you have no idea as to how to go about it. Learn just how simple and easy it can be to nominate someone you think is worth it.
Your evenings hosts, JoAnn and Sandy, are longtime professional aviation educators as well as NAFI recognized Master Flight Instructors. Often referred to as Colorado's version of John and Martha King, their presentations are always informative, lively and entertaining.

Services for Sunny Bragg
A memorial service will be held 2 PM Friday, April 21, 2006 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry
Street, Longmont, Colorado 80501, 303-776-2313/FAX 303-776-5081
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Longmont Meals on Wheels. Visit www.ahlbergfuneralchapel.com" to leave condolences for the family.
With great sadness I received the message that we lost Sunny recently. I say lost because, for the rest of us, missing Sunny will be a loss. Serving as an officer for EAA648 for two years with Sunny, Earl, Haiko, and Ken was an honor and something truly worthwhile. The support from these guys, the Leyners and many other chapter members when an event came together made it fun even when there were rough edges. Sunny did very well for us and certainly has made our lives richer for being there.
Warm Regards
Tony Dean

Services for Heather McRoberts
8:00 AM to 12 Noon.
Back in January of 2004 our chapter had the enjoyable opportunity to meet a couple of youths who would inspire anyone who were ever to meet them. In particular Heather McRoberts gave an outstanding presentation on their upcoming plans to travel the country in a couple of Luscombe aircraft.
Our chapter was enriched to have met Heather McRoberts and we are deeply saddened to hear that she and another pilot were killed in an airplane crash on Rollins Pass on there way back from Kremmling on Sunday morning.
There will be a memorial service for her at Boulder Municipal Airport on Sat. Morning, Aug 5th at 8:00 am.
The memorial service for Heather will be held at 8:00 a.m. this Saturday at the Bob Brungard Aviation hangar, Boulder Airport. This is the west most large hangar on your right, after making a left at the T on the airport entrance.
Jan & David McRoberts have requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Antique Airplane Association of Colorado Scholarship Fund, to be used specifically for young people who are interested in learning to fly.
This is the local chapter of the AAA. Anyone interested in making such a donation can send it to
Ed Pruss
7231 Glacier View Rd
Longmont, CO 80503
BE SURE TO WRITE “HEATHER MCROBERTS “ ON THE CHECK.

Services for Phillip McClelland
Dear fellow EAAers,
The Longmont paper today has the obituary for Phillip McClelland. Phillip was a member of Chapter 648 for several years but has not been lately due to illness. You might remember he has a RV6 project and also a Midget Mustang project. His sense of humor might have been his most endearing characteristic and his willingness to help others. He tried for years to get me to designate one night a week to work with me on my Glasair project that just collects dust. Phillip fought colon cancer for several years. He passed away last Friday. A celebration of Phillip’s life will be held at 11 am Saturday Oct. 28, 2006 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1500 Ninth Avenue in Longmont. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. Check www.longmontfyi.com for full obituary and information to send condolences or make contributions.
Phillip was a good friend and chapter member that I will surely miss tremendously,
David Shenk
